PR Writing 

Mississippi State University Department of Health Promotion and Wellness | Spring 2022

One of the most important skills in Communication is good writing. This course focused on AP-style writing in everything from campaign planning to press releases to social media. The class's client was the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) which prioritizes educating college students on all health-related topics. This page shows a few pieces of my work throughout this course.

This particular flyer was used as a promotional tactic for HPW's International Cooking Night held during Mississippi State's International Week. It was designed to have a vertical hierarchy with eye-catching visuals at the bottom to help pull the viewer's eye down the page.

Mississippi State's HPW has existed for many years but its presence on campus is not well known. This brochure was created as a form of educational media to increase the awareness of HPW's presence and offerings to MSU students and faculty.

The second side of the brochure continues the same design aspects while providing detailed information about the department's offerings and initiatives. This brochure was created with the intention of handing it out to students throughout March in order to help increase attendance at upcoming events.

Campaign Plan

Goals, Objectives, Strategies and Tactics

At the beginning of the course, we worked in groups to create an overall plan for our client. This outline focuses the promotions on three target audiences: Interfraternity Council members, faculty and staff, and minority students. 

News Release 

I wrote this news release in order to increase media attention on HPW. This particular new release introduces HPW's newest communication intern. 

Feature Story

One of HPW's initiatives in the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC). This article features a student a part of the CRC and his story of resilience and recovery. 

Media Pitch Email

I selected an editor from The Reflector, our school newspaper, to email my feature story. Considering the story was about a Mississippi State student and focused on alcohol addiction, it was most appropriate to send to the newspaper that had the largest student audience.

News Release, Fact Sheet and Media Alert

In this assignment, we were instructed to create a large event worthy of lots of press coverage. My event was a Back to School Bash concert that would attract Starkville locals and students alike and provide HPW with the opportunity to increase its awareness and educate the public on mental health.
